Cleanup Day
In honor of Earth Month, and in partnership with the Athens Village Board and Athens Dept of Public Works, we call on our residents, neighbors and friends each April to help us collect trash from our local landscape.
As a non-profit community organization, Friends of Athens takes great pride in the health and beauty of our beloved village and aims to support a clean and safe environment for all to enjoy now and in the future to come.
Last year we collected 36 bags of trash and volunteers both young and old were energized by our success.

Riverkeeper Sweep
Each year, in early May, Riverkeeper encourages citizens to get involved in a shoreline cleanup, invasive species removal, or tree planting project at a multitude of locations along the length of the Hudson River greenway, from New York City to the Adirondacks.
Friends of Athens joins forces with Riverkeeper for an annual Hudson River cleanup by kayak at the Northwest End of Middle Ground Flats, between Athens and Hudson north of the Hudson Athens Lighthouse.

Victorian Stroll
The Athens Victorian Stroll is an ongoing and beloved annual tradition in Athens NY.
Families and friends gather in early December for a free, fun-filled day of celebration up and down the historic village’s Second Street and all around town, businesses, residents and community organizations host family-friendly activities, offer free goodies to eat and provide entertainment galore, with a nod to Athens’s past.
Activities include horse-drawn hay wagon rides, historic house tours of the Van Loon House, arts and crafts vendors, ice skating at the Athens Riverfront Park, an Athens cemetery tour led by local historian Jonathan Palmer, live music events, an ice sculpture demonstration, a fire dancers performance, and much more.
